Walmart And Apple Should Pay Part Of The Cost Of Floating The Seventh Fleet

Are Companies More Powerful Than Countries? This question the title of an article by Time.com writer Rana Foroohar has to be rated as one of the most important questions of this century.

It’s obvious a country’s geographical position has nothing to do with whether or not a company manufactures their products on its soil. If CEO’s thought they could manufacture their goods on the moon that’s where they’d go. And a nation’s political inclinations with the exceptions of countries like Iran, North Korea, and Syria also have no bearing on the manufacturing location.

In the land of capitalism the only real consideration is the bottom line, which means CEO’s don’t give a damn about blue collar employees.

With the rise of the internet, companies CEO’s and their henchmen don’t have to live where they perceive a threat to their physical well-being; nor would they allow their assets to be held in a country that could block access to said holdings. So off-shore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, etc. are the order of the day.

It’s unfortunate but world commerce is what is in this new age. Corporations have always wanted to and try very hard to avoid the taxes and rules governing the countries where they do business. But as Labor economist Clyde Prestowitz pointed out in an article in Foreign Policy this week; “while Apple may not think American economic issues are its “problem,” it certainly depends on the Seventh Fleet to keep Asian waterways safe and clear so that it can deliver its products”.

Large sums of American tax dollars get spent on the military hardware and personal to keep the seas safe; so the idea that merchandise manufactured in foreign locals gets protected by the American military at the expense of the American people while robbing the same people of jobs is a tuff pill to swallow.

The cost for the American Seventh Fleet riding shotgun while these goods are brought to the American market should be handed to companies like Apple and Wal-Mart. That would certainly get their attention, and most certainly bring much of the manufacturing back to North American shores.

But until that day…….

Welcome to China-Mart! Sorry Wal-Mart! You can find the new iPhone in our electronics department. Have a nice day shopping!
